Granny’s clothesline
Granny’s Clothesline
Clothesline in my grandmother’s backyard. The clothes must be a tenant’s, since she doesn’t wear bright colours. Emergency ExitTwo dogs descended the stairs as I framed this picture, then proceeded to make an emergency exit, bounding from stair to compound wall to street. Dogs may not have the dexterity of limbs to climb like cats, but they sure do make good use of available facilities. Poor [info]brainz had an unnerving experience when the dog sailed directly overhead.

This one reminds me a lot of my paternal grandmother's house (maternal grandmum has an apartment; she's not too traditional and stuff). There was a plant from which we made mehendi and stuff. Can't remember what it's called, but in Tamil its marudhani. Really miss the kind of houses in India.

Marudhani is Henna, isn't it?

Mm, yess, that's the one. My cousins and sister and I would pluck those leaves all afternoon while we were supposed to be sleeping, and have our grandmum grind them up. We always made those huge round splotches on our palms and the cap kinda things for our finger tips. I don't know why, it looked pretty sick.

God, and I thought my hindi was bad ;-/

Oh, the splotch/cap thing is pretty gross, I agree. I never figured out why anyone would want that done to them. Nice patterns, sure, I can understand, but the splotch-cap, nah.

A lot of people are into it... I remember that all my cousins got a mehendi lady to come in for their weddings. But that's all the more north-indian kind of designs, though.

:-)
Ok, it feels so good to see a house just like the ones on my street in Bangalore when I was growing up.

You mean you're not growing up now?

I'm growing in a lot of ways, but certainly not 'up'. Any increase in height has not showed up in measurements for some time now. Bangalore was where I gained all of my height, hence the usage.

Sadly, this place is going to be replaced by an apartment block in a couple of years. It's the last holdout in the neighbourhood and it no longer makes financial sense.

The dog picture is fantastic. Awesome job there. Do you actually walk around with your phone camera out in your hand and pointed at the world ... or what?

I wish I could, but (a) I've pretty much given up carrying a camera in Pune since there's so little time, and (b) the scene usually holds long enough to take the camera out of the bag. The dog picture was a lucky chance.

houses in small towns in orissa look like this too.
my dad grew up in a house that resembled this quite a bit. *sigh* a pity we sold it off.
thanks for sharing jace...brought back some beautiful memories :)
